Malaysia says tsunami losses top $26 million
KUALA LUMPUR: Tsunami damage to Malaysia’s northwest coast has caused losses of more than 100 million ringgit ($26.3 million), the government said on Tuesday. The states of Kedah and Penang suffered the worst damage from the Dec. 26 tsunami, which killed 68 people in Malaysia. Both states face the Malacca Strait, which separates the country from Indonesia. “Overall, the damage wreaked by this disaster exceeds 100 million ringgit,” Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted by state-run Bernama news agency as saying while visiting Kedah. Najib said the sum took into account damage to houses, boats, vehicles roads, bridges, community halls and jetties. More than 144,000 people have been killed in southern Asia and thousands left homeless after a powerful undersea earthquake off Indonesia’s island of Sumatra triggered the tsunami. reuters
