Newspaper editor killed in Sherpur

DHAKA: A newspaper editor was stabbed to death by unknown assailants Sunday in northern Bangladesh, police and colleagues said. Dipankar Chokroborty, 55, executive editor of Dainik Durjoy Bangla, was stabbed in the throat and was left dying by the roadside near his home in Sherpur district, 145 kilometres north of Dhaka, said AK Azad, a local journalist. The newspaper is published in nearby Bogra town. Police and family members have few clues as to who was behind the attack, a police officer said on condition of anonymity. Police were looking for some men who reportedly fled the scene on a motorbike after the attack, the officer said. “He did not have any known enemies,” Azad said. Journalists in Bangladesh often face threats, assaults and even death for reporting on sensitive topics like corruption, political violence and organized crime, media rights groups say. Since 1997, at least eight Bangladeshi journalists have been killed, including two this year, and several others injured. ap
