SC adjourns Paktel plea against PTA
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of an appeal by the Paktel Mobile Company against the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) till September 2.
The bench consisted of Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar, Justice Shakirullah Jan and Justice M Javed Buttar. Counsels for the company Abdul Hafeez Pirzada and Tariq Rahim pleaded that they were negotiating with the PTA and hoped to reach an agreement within the next few days.
The conflict between the two companies arose when the PTA demanded the Paktel Company submit $40 million for the conversion of its system from AIMS to GSM. Calling the conversion cost unreasonable, the Paktel Company moved the Lahore High Court and asked for its to be reduced. Earlier, a division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected the Paktel plea and told it to submit the amount if it wanted to convert the system from AIMS to GSM. The company moved an appeal to the Supreme Court against the LHC decision and reduction of amount for the conversion of its system.
