Rushdie versus beard

By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: Salman Rushdie has shaved off his beard, not because of any religious or secular reasons but to please his Indian model wife Padma Lakshmi.

Having sported a beard for 16 years, the author said he was now trying to “get reacquainted with the lower half of his face.” Not everyone in the family is pleased at his new appearance. His seven and half year old son, Milan, wants him to grow it right back. “Children are very resistant to change,” Rushdie explained.

His forthcoming book ‘Shalimar the Clown’ is wrapped in mystery as to its theme. When pressed, the author said that all he could disclose was that there was a lot of cooking in it. Indian/Pakistani cooking, one can assume.
