Pakistani prisoner dies in India

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: As India and Pakistan began talking on releasing prisoners of both countries languishing in each other’s jails and other issues on Monday, a Pakistani prisoner died in a prison in eastern Uttar Pradesh late Sunday night.

Reports stated that Pakistani citizen Muhammad Sadiq (alias Siddique), imprisoned in a district jail in the eastern UP town of Basti for the last 10 years, died in a local hospital. District police chief Amitabh Thakur said Sadiq was a resident of Prailabad of western Hyderabad, Sindh and his father and other relatives belonged to Kaptan Ganj of Ohja Ganj Police Station in Basti district.

Sadiq had travelled to Mandha town on a regular visa to meet his relatives in 1996. However, he chose to stay even after his visa expired. He was arrested for staying illegally in Mandha town. His case was pending before court from 1996 till he fell ill on August 24. District authorities said he was soon taken to hospital, where he died on Sunday.
