LCB to document trees

LAHORE: The Lahore Cantonment Board (LCB) will document trees within its jurisdiction. The board will number, catalogue and label and write the trees’ salient features (age and botanical name) on their trunks.

The aim of the exercise was to promote a tree loving culture among the residents of Cantt and improve the general environment, said the Inter Services Public Relations (IRCP) on Monday.

The IRCP said the campaign would improve the flora and fauna of the area. Measures taken to achieve this goal included a survey of trees, initiation of a massive tree plantation campaign, prevention of cutting old trees, identification of the oldest trees and preservation of wild life, it added.

The LCB was taking measures to discourage cutting of trees and road development projects were planned in such a manner that trees along roadsides would not be damaged. The authorities were asked to identify the three oldest trees of Lahore Garrison and ensure their preservation.

It was also planned to hold workshops and lectures on a regular basis in this regard.

Efforts were also being made to highlight ecological life in the cantonment premises and to create awareness among people about birds and animals that were on the verge of extinction. The Corps Headquarters asked its units to participate in the current monsoon tree plantation campaign. Army officers were participating in the campaign by planting trees in their areas.

A target to plant 775,000 seeds was set under the Army tree plantation campaign for Monsoon 2005. app
