US seeks Pakistan’s return to democracy
ISLAMABAD: The United States has offered to help Pakistan conduct a free and fair parliamentary election in October and return the military-ruled country to democracy, US officials said on Monday.
US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Christina Rocca, who arrived here on Sunday with Secretary of State Colin Powell, stayed on for talks with local political leaders to discuss the elections, a US embassy spokesman said. Ms Rocca offered to train election monitors and provide observers for the parliamentary, provincial and senate elections scheduled for October 10, the US embassy said. —AFP
