Teachers responsible for education woes, says Zubaida

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Education Ms Zubaida Jalal said the standard of education in the country depended directly on the teaching community and that it was the government’s responsibility to encourage a revolution in the educational arena.

Addressing a ceremony to distribute the ‘Best University Teacher Award’ 2001 at the University Grants Commission, she said, “There is little hope for advancement in the quality of education unless teachers revive their commitment to the profession.”

Ms Jalal said the Ministry of Education had taken a good initiative to this effect and introduced the long desired system of incentives and rewards for university teachers, through a process of evaluation of their contribution in the respective fields. This will motivate teachers to enhance their participation in the development of higher education and research, and would attract the country’s intellectuals to this noble profession. She said conferring awards on teachers would encourage them to disseminate quality education, which is one of the thrust areas of Education Sector Reforms (ESR). Speaking on the occasion, the UGC Chairman said the teachers play a pivotal role in imparting quality education to the students of the country. They are the ones who deserve all praise and awards. He announced the approval of 300 scholarships, for the social sciences, worth Rs.194.34 billion. —Online
