Former boxing world champion dies in boating accident in Norway
OSLO: Former cruiser-weight boxing world champion Magne Havnaa was killed in a boating accident off the southern coast of Norway early Saturday morning, police said.
“I can confirm that Magne Havnaa was killed in a boating accident,” a police officer at the local Risoer police precinct told AFP. The 40-year-old retired Norwegian professional boxer was reportedly found dead in the water, while his 38-year-old wife was found injured and weak hanging onto a rope attached to the couple’s out-of-control boat, which was speeding around in circles.
People on land spotted the boat spinning wildly at around 4:30 am (0230 GMT), and another boat was forced to ram into it to make it stop, Norwegian news agency NTB reported. Havnaa’s wife was on Saturday afternoon being treated for her injuries at a local hospital and was in stable condition, NTB reported. Havnaa won the World Boxing Organization’s cruiser-weight title in 1990, after beating American Richard Pultz with a knock-out in the fifth round. Havnaa won 19 of the 22 professional fights he participated in before he retired in 1993 at the age of 29. afp
