Benazir asks Durrani govt to review passage of Sharia Bill
WASHINGTON: Pakistan People Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has called on the NWFP government to review its decision to secure the passage of the Shariat Bill in the Assembly, saying the move not undermined women’s rights but could also damage Pakistan’s image in the world.
Replying to a question from Daily Times, Ms Bhutto expressed her concern at the presentation of the Shariat Bill in the NWFP Assembly.
She said the Bill intended on the creation of creation of a department of vice and virtue, adding, such a department only existed in Afghanistan during the days of the Taliban.”
Ms Bhutto said the presentation of the Bill could undermine women’s rights and inculcate a spirit of insecurity among them, adding the Bill could also hurt Pakistan’s image overseas. She called on the NWFP government to review the decision.
