‘Law and Order’ star Jerry Orbach dies

NEW YORK: Jerry Orbach, long-running star of the hit US crime-and-justice television show “Law and Order,” has died in New York of prostate cancer. He was 69.

Orbach died on Tuesday night in New York City, said a spokeswoman for the Lippin Group public relations agency which represents the NBC series.

Orbach, who played detective Lennie Briscoe on “Law and Order,” had worked on the show for its first 12 seasons.

Originally a stage actor who specialised in musicals, Orbach sought to break into film and television on the 1980s and 1990s.

After supporting roles in the 1981 Sidney Lumet drama “Prince of the City” and the crime-thriller F/X, Orbach scored his best known movie role as the father of a rebellious teenage girl in the runaway hit “Dirty Dancing.” afp
