Blast kills nine Afghan cops

KABUL: Nine Afghan policemen were killed and another on injured on Saturday when a landmine planted by suspected insurgents exploded under their vehicle near Pakistan’s southern border, the Interior Ministry said.

The attack happened in the southern province of Kandahar where Taliban militants are active.

“A group of Afghan soldiers and border policemen were travelling from Spin Boldak to Kandahar and a mine exploded. Nine police officers were killed,” Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told AFP. “One police officer was (also) injured and the vehicle was entirely destroyed”, he said and added that the landmine was planted on the road and was “remote controlled,” the Interior Ministry spokesman said. “I don’t know if the Taliban did it. Kandahar police were sent there to investigate, but it is definitely the work of the enemies of peace and stability in Afghanistan,” he added. A Taliban spokesman told Pakistan-based private Afghan Islamic Press that the attack was carried out by Taliban. agencies
