Indonesia’s tsunami-hit Aceh rattled by new quake

JAKARTA: A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rattled Indonesia’s Aceh province Saturday - the latest in a series of aftershocks to hit the region after the December 26 tsunami disaster. A spokesman for the Meteorology and Geophysics agency said there were no reports of damage or casualties from the quake which struck at 9:55 am (0255 GMT), 85 kilometres (52 miles) northwest of the main city of Banda Aceh. He said the tremor was not strong enough to generate a tsunami. “We predict in these coming weeks, that more of these will happen in Aceh, although we can’t predict how big they will be,” agency official Syahnan said. afp
