ARD condemns scientists’ debriefing
PESHAWAR: The Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Secretary General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra has said the debriefing and humiliation of scientists was the first step towards a Pakistan nuclear program roll back.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, at the camp set up by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Saddar Road to protest the debriefing of nuclear scientists, Mr Jhagra accused the government of following the United States agenda. He vowed that the ARD and the Pakistani nation would continue their struggle to frustrate the government’s designs, that he said, “were not in the interest of the country”.
Mr Jhagra said the national heroes were being harassed and humiliated to discourage the future generation from continuing their work in the atomic program.
President General Pervez Musharraf could not say in public that he was rolling back the nuclear program, Mr Jhagra said, adding that the president had adopted what he called the “debriefing way”. “The entire exercise was aimed at rolling back the nuclear program,” Mr Jhagra added.
“The government wanted to weaken Pakistan and sideline the Kashmir issue according to India’s wishes and make Pakistan a secular state,” Mr Jhagra said. He warned that the ARD, the PML-N and the Pakistani nation would not allow this.
He demanded the release of all political prisoners including the PML-N acting President Javed Hashmi and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s spouse Asif Ali Zardari to pave the way for the restoration of genuine democracy in Pakistan. He assured the nuclear scientists of the ARD and the PML-N’s support saying that “the entire nation is with you”. He demanded the government immediately end debriefing of the scientists.
PML-N Provincial President Pir Sabir Shah said the government was following the American and the Indian agenda to disintegrate Pakistan. He said the national heroes were being humiliated at the behest of the US.
Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Anwar Kamal Marwat, Arbab Khizar Hayat, Advocate Abdul Razaq, Hussein Bakhsh, Haji Muhammad Afzal and Dr Haroon were present in the camp.
