Arundhati Roy donates prize money to charities

WASHINGTON: Indian writer Arundhati Roy has decided to donate the prize money she recently won in the United States to a large number of worthy causes.
Ms Roy won the $350,000 Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom 2002 which was set up in 1999 to “recognise people whose extraordinary and courageous work celebrates the human right to freedom of imagination, (and) inquiry and expression, cultural freedom (being) the right of individuals and communities to define and protect valued and diverse ways of life currently threatened by globalisation.” Ms Roy has decided to donate her prize money to 50 people’s movements, publications, educational institutions, theatre groups and individuals in India.
