2 women dead, one critically ill

Staff Report

MARDAN: Two women died and one was seriously injured in separate incidents in Mardan district, police sources told Daily Times on Thursday.

In the first incident, a Lundkhwar woman, identified as Noorjehan, was shot dead by her estranged husband, Ghaniur Rehman. He reportedly locked her in his house after spotting her trying to visit their children. Neighbours reported the incident to the police who stormed the house. Rehman and an accomplice open-fired on the police. Noorjehan was caught in the crossfire and died instantly. Her brother lodged an FIR against Rehman at Lundkhwar police station. The accused has not as yet been arrested.

In Takhtbai area, a young girl identified as Fouzia Bibi, committed suicide when she took a gun to her head after her parents decided to marry her against her will to a neighbour, identified as Dolat Khan.

Another Lundkhwar woman remains in a critical condition after being allegedly stabbed by her ex-husband, Mohammad Khan, when she refused to remarry him. The couple had divorced one year ago. Local police lodged an FIR against Khan but he dodged arrest.
