Comedian Shahzia Mirza to visit Pakistan

By Ayesha Javed

During the three years, Shahzia Mirza (at least that is what her pilot’s licence says) has been involved with comedy, had toured many countries and hopes the next one will be Pakistan, her first visit to the country her father hails from.

Shahzia Mirza, a teacher, discovered her talent for stand-up comedy when she was trying to make her students laugh. A first gig at a comedy club and she was a hit.

The remarks of rather poker-faced lady have the audience throwing up their dinner, yet she manages to maintain a serious demeanour. At the end of the day one must say: she is a serious, hard working and extremely well organised person.

She has her own answer to a lot of questions. When people ask her why her mother always walks five feet behind her father, her reply is simple: “Because he looks better from behind.” Though she has lived mostly in London and Birmingham, she can tell you a thing or two about PIA. “I was recently on a direct PIA flight from Islamabad to Stansted and on the way, the plane stopped at Islamabad, Hyderabad and Jalalabad.”

She is the Muslim world’s most revolutionary representative and ever since 9/11, Shahzia has started to play up the Muslim element even more. “Since the World Trade Center disaster, I feel the need to crack jokes about Muslim traditions in order to dispel some of the fears associated with our religion and culture,” she says. And Before her visit to Pakistan if you wish to act some of her act, tune in to BBC 1 on November 11 to catch her show.
