World’s best gather for Melbourne poker tournament
The world’s best poker players will gather in Melbourne this weekend for the southern hemisphere’s richest poker tournament, an organiser said. Only the cream of the world’s poker aficionados are expected to pay the 10,000-dollar buy-in fee to compete in the Aussie Millions poker championships at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.
The three-day championship, which begins on January 15, will be preceded by two weeks of daily contests with more than 1.5 million dollars up for grabs during the tournament. US tournament pro Phil Helmuth Jr, who has won nine gold bracelets in World Series poker competitions, is among 150 players expected to attend.
“This is an event that’s gaining recognition internationally as one of the major tournaments,” Crown Casino spokeswoman Kathryn Farrell said, adding that the tournament was the richest in the southern hemisphere. “This year, for the first time, we’ll have some of the top US players, people who have won millions of dollars all over the world.” —AFP
