Indian FM to visit Iran next month

NEW DELHI: Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh will visit Iran in September for talks with new President Mahmud Amedinejad that will likely include a proposed $7.4 billion gas pipeline between Iran and India, media reports said on Sunday.

His three-day visit from September 2 follows a trip to Iran in June by Indian Oil Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar.

During that visit a joint working group was established to study the feasibility of the pipeline project, which will pass through Pakistan, the Press Trust of India news agency said, quoting unidentified sources. Singh will convey New Delhi’s willingness to work closely with the new Iranian government to implement a “strategic partnership” agreed to by the two sides in 2003 spanning oil, science and information technology and other areas. afp
