MMA demands official vote count for UC-150

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (Lahore) is demanding an official count of votes for the slots of nazim, naib-nazim and councillors in 150 union councils, said MMA (Lahore) President Hafiz Salman Butt on Sunday.

Butt urged the chief election commissioner to cancel the unofficial notification of election results and issue the official gazette, after votes were recounted under the supervision of district returning officers (DRO). He alleged that around 30 nazim candidates and 16 naib-nazim belonging to the party had won their slots on election night, but only 10 nazim and five naib-nazims were declared successful. He added that 200 different councillors were also elected from the Watton Dost group according to the unofficial result.

The MMA (Lahore) president said that opposition parties would decide whether or not to sit in district assemblies after the official results were announced. He said the party’s future strategy over the recent local council elections would be decided in its supreme council meeting today (Monday). He added that the MMA was negotiating with other political parties to field joint candidates for the slots of district and town nazims and naib-nazims.
