Indian truckers end week-long strike

NEW DELHI: Indian truckers called off their week-old strike on Saturday after reaching an agreement with the government, a senior official said. “After very detailed discussions and deliberations we have reached an agreement,” senior finance ministry official Vineeta Rai told reporters. “In the spirit of great cooperation and in public interest they have kindly agreed to call off the strike.” About three million trucks had been off the roads across the country since last Saturday when India’s largest truckers’ union called the strike to press the government to scrap a service tax proposed in the 2004/05 budget. reuters
