Tamil Tigers kill military informer

COLOMBO: Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot dead a military informer near the Sri Lankan capital on Saturday, police said.

Gunmen killed Dushantha Kumar at his home in a Colombo suburb, just 12 days after gunning down another rival Tamil activist, police said. “The victim was known by the alias of Suresh and he was a key informant of a military unit that earleir operated from (Colombo suburb of) Athurugiriya,” a police official said.

The killing is the third in a month. Two men opposed to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were gunned down on August 16 and on July 31. Tamil minister Douglas Devananda, who is also a member of the Colombo cabinet, escaped assassination in a suspected suicide bomber attack earlier last month that killed four police officers.

The Tamil Tigers have also been blamed for a spate of killings of rivals in the island’s embattled eastern region. afp
