5 special envoys to steer diplomatic offensive

By Rana Qaisar

ISLAMABAD: The government on Tuesday nominated five men, including politicians, diplomats and a former army chief, as special envoys of President Pervez Musharraf to visit various countries and apprise their respective governments of the regional situation.

The five men are former president Farooq Leghari, former chairman of the senate Wasim Sajjad, former chief of army staff (COAS) Jehangir Karamat, former foreign secretary Najmuddin Sheikh, and senior diplomat Jehangir Ashraf Qazi, who has just returned from New Delhi.

“They held a detailed meeting with President Musharraf, who briefed them on the situation and the steps already initiated by Pakistan to reduce tension with India,” sources said. Mr Leghari will go to Germany and Russia. However, the countries to be visited by the four other special envoys have not been announced.
