Chances of new tsunami small

JAKARTA: Despite continuing aftershocks, the chances of a new tsunami similar to the one that unleashed carnage on shores around the Indian Ocean are slim, Indonesian meteorologists said on Tuesday. But although tidal waves were not a danger, strong tremors could claim more lives as structures weakened by Sunday’s catastrophic seismic event could collapse, said Suwarjono of Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. “If we look at the continuing aftershocks and tremors, the possibility of another tsunami is very small,” he said. “To cause a tsunami an earthquake should have a minimum magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale and judging by the trend, it does not seem likely we will have aftershocks of that magnitude.” afp
