US concern over Hashmi’s arrest
By Khalid Hasan
WASHINGTON: The US government has shown its concern over the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Javed Hashmi’s arrest through multiple channels both here and in Pakistan.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, US diplomats had raised Mr Hashmi’s case with Pakistani Foreign Ministry officials in Islamabad, and the State Department had also expressed its views about Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi.
US Embassy spokesman Andrew Steinfeld said political officers from the embassy were in contact with Mr Hashmi’s family. US Ambassador Nancy Powell mentioned Hashmi’s case during a speech on US foreign policy towards Pakistan where she called for its resolution.
