‘NWFP govt providing relief to flood victims’

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani on Monday told the NWFP Assembly that his government was taking every step to provide relief to the flood victims in the province.

Responding to a point of order raised by Maulana Idrees of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Sikandar Sherpao of the Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) and Bashir Ahmad Bilour of the Awami National Party (ANP), Durrani said that initially Rs 10 million had been released for the flood victims of Chitral, Swat, Dir, Nowshera, Charsadda and Peshawar districts, adding that additional funds would be also be given.

He said that relief commissioners’ power had been transferred to district coordination officers (DCOs) for immediate assistance to the victims.

“I have directed the Irrigation Department to send its demands to contain the flood,” he added.

The chief minister said that he had asked Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to honour the NWFP Assembly resolution and release funds for relief activities.

The prime minister, he added, had promised that he would personally visit the affected areas and would announce assistance for the victims.

Durrani said that the people whose houses and standing crops were destroyed would be compensated.
