PPP holding talks with govt ‘only to restore democracy’

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) top brass is holding talks with the government not to strike a deal to come to power but to restore democracy in the country, said PPP leaders.

Addressing a news conference after a meeting of the Central Reception Committee on Sunday, Jehangir Bader, PPP secretary general, Khalid Kharal and Senator Safdar Abbasi said, “Our only goal is to restore real democracy, rule of law, the original Constitution and a stable political system .”

The participants at the meeting formed a divisional committee to coordinate with the reception committees which were formed earlier by the PPP’s Punjab chapter.

“We assure the government that the PPP will receive its leaders peacefully,” Bader said. He said that the PPP had written to the authorities in this regard but had received no reply. Abbasi said that the arrival of Zardari would be a test for the government’s claims of moderation.

Naheed Khan, Abbasi, Aitzaz Ahsan, Qasim Zia, Aslam Gurdaspuri, Aslam Gill, Khalid Ghurki and Azizur Rehman Chan are on the Lahore City Committee. Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed, Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali, Malik Mustaq Awan and Rana Shaukat Mehmood are on the Lahore Division Committee. The Bahawalpur Division Committee consists of Zaka Ashraf, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Afzal Sindhu and Abdul Shaheen. The Multan Committee consists of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Hussain Shah and Mukhtar Awan. Khalid Kharal and Rana Aftab Khan are on the Faisalabad Committee. Ahmad Mukhtar, Ghulam Abbas and Qamar Zaman Kaira make up the Gujranwala Committee. Ishanul Haq Piracha and Dr Naveed are on the Sargodha Committee. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Sultan Mehmood, and Dr Safdar Abbasi are on the Rawalpindi Committee. Munir Ahmad Khan will look after international and national media.
