US nursing home blaze kills eight
NASHVILLE: Fire swept through a Nashville nursing home killing eight people and critically injuring 20, officials said on Friday. The victims, including the mother of one of the fire chiefs called to the four-story facility, died of smoke inhalation and burns, according to Nashville fire department spokesman Charles Shannon. Survivors were rescued from the burning Nashville Health Care Center by dozens of fire fighters, who had to stretcher many of the frail and elderly patients out a second-floor window on ladders. The cause of the blaze, which broke out late Thursday, was under investigation, Shannon added. —AFP
