CBR launches new mechanism to facilitate taxpayers

KARACHI: Central Board of Revenue’s largest taxpayers unit (LTU), Karachi on Monday launched electronic compliance mechanism to facilitate its taxpayers, which will come into effect from 1st July 2003.

Speaking on the occasion the Director General LTU, Akhtar Jamil Khan said that this mechanism would help taxpayers who could now file their withholding tax statements through electronic mechanism, which would save them from exhausting paper work.

He said this mechanism would lead to automatic credit adjustment of tax in the statements, which was deducted through challans.

He said now all the queries from the taxpayers can also be entertained electronically through e-mail to minimize their physical contacts with tax officials, which would save their time and money.

The Director General LTU said that the taxpayers would be given training in batches about the application of this system to get them ready for action from July 1, 2003.

The taxpayers would be provided software to convert their operation into this new multi-purpose system. The DG said the Income Tax returns could be filed the same way, but there are certain legal requirements which would be hopefully met within few months. “We have already done our home-work for this.”

He told taxpayers that after July 1 this year it would be compulsory for them to write their National Tax Number while filing their returns.

The CBR would soon set up counters where under simple procedure the tax payers would get NTN within an hour or two, he said adding “ our people will be available there for help.” Later, detailed presentation was made by LTU experts. —APP
