Seven killed in Kashmir violence
SRINAGAR: Indian troops killed six militants in a mountainous Kashmir district bordering the Pakistani-zone of the divided state, while suspected rebels hanged to death a civilian, police and army officials said on Tuesday.
The rebels were killed during gun battles in the forests of Kupwara district, army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel VK Batra told AFP. "The operation in the forests is continuing," he said, adding the troops were searching for more militants.
Five assault rifles, 10 Chinese-made grenades and one radio set were recovered from the site of the fighting, Batra said.
In the neighbouring Baramulla district suspected rebels hanged to death a Muslim civilian, police said. No rebel group claimed responsibility for the killing.
Kupwara borders a heavily militarized ceasefire line dividing Pakistan-administered Kashmir from the Indian zone. afp
