4 killed in Held Kashmir violence
SRINAGAR: Four people were killed, three of them by suspected militants, in Held Kashmir where security forces were put on alert ahead of a rare visit by India’s president to the restive region.
Police said suspected militants Wednesday hanged to death a Muslim, Mohammed Hussain Deedar, in the village of Wagbal in northern Kupwara district.
“We are investigating why he was targetted,” a police spokesman said. Also on Wednesday suspected militants shot dead Akhter Hussain, a shepherd, and Mohammed Shafi, a member of Hizbul Mujahedin, in Doda, the spokesman said.
A militant was killed and an army soldier injured in two gunbattles in Rajouri and Kupwara districts on Tuesday, police said.
The fresh killings occurred even as several thousand extra police, paramilitary forces and soldiers were deployed in the held region for a rare visit by the president starting Thursday. —AFP
