ED okays 1,200 recruits for Security Div

ISLAMABAD: The Establishment Division (ED) has approved the recruitment of 1,200 personnel, turning down an Interior Ministry request for hiring over 4,100 people to form the Security Division, sources say.

The Security Division is being set up for the security of VVIPs including the president, prime minister and foreign dignitaries. The 4,100-personnel proposal had primarily been submitted by the Islamabad district administration to the Establishment Division which simply forwarded it to the Interior Ministry.

The ministry also recommended the post of deputy inspector general of police for the federal capital to supervise the Security Division and police operations, the sources said. The project is costing Rs 2 billion. The capital police’s existing strength is 5,800. Following new recruitments, the number will touch 7,000. According to the proposal submitted by the district administration, 3,000 police officials will work with the operational force while the rest will be transferred to the Security Division. The capital chief commissioner has proposed to title the inspector general of police as the capital police chief.

The Interior Ministry has sent a proposal to the Establishment Division to double the salaries of all police officials working for the division. There is also a proposal to double the salaries of 1,500 of 3,000 cops deputed in the city, subject to their performance. The Interior Ministry has endorsed a district administration proposal to create a special squad consisting of 110 traffic cops to look after VVIPs routes. Sultan Mahmood Tamuri is likely to take over as SSP, Security Division. The Aiwan-e-Sadr, Prime Minister’s House and Diplomatic Protection Department SPs will be answerable to the Security SSP, the sources said. —Shahzad Malik
