Govt promoting education, says Soomro

LAHORE: The promotion of education is one of the prime objectives of the present government and efforts are being made to enhance country’s literacy rate, said Senate Chairman Muhammadmian Soomro at a function held in connection with the International Literacy Day celebrations at the Alhamra Hall on Saturday.

Bunyad Literacy Community Council (BLCC) organised the event. Soomro appreciated BLCC’s efforts in increasing Pakistan’s literacy rate and assured his cooperation for this cause.

BLCC founder Shaheen Atiqur Rehman told the participants that the council had been promoting basic education in the country, particularly in Punjab’s rural communities for more than a decade. It focused on women and children of the rural areas including children who worked in carpet weaving, surgical instrument manufacturing and football industry, she added.

Shaheen said that 6,547 literacy centres were educating 400,000 working children in 20 districts of Punjab. She said the BLCC had motivated 7,000 children who were now receiving education in 1,500 public schools.

Children working in surgical items’ manufacturing and other units staged a drama and tableaus and sang national songs under the ‘importance of education in the society’ theme.

Abid Saeed, the Punjab secretary for Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department, was present on the occasion. app
