Annan blamed for UN bombing

CAIRO: An Egyptian state-owned newspaper Sunday blamed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his “submission” to the United States for the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

“UN Secretary General Kofin Annan alone bears the responsibility for this hideous act, after he agreed to provide the required legal cover for the occupation of Iraq,” wrote the Al-Akhbar daily in its main editorial. “The motive of the group who carried out the crime of blowing up the UN building .. was the submission of the international organisation to US hegemony,” added the piece, signed by Al-Akhbar chief editor Galal Duweidar. —AFP
