Rumsfeld says US will find Iraqi WMD evidence
WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Tuesday he believed it was “just a matter of time” before evidence of weapons of mass destruction was found in Iraq, and that it was still early in the hunt.
“I have reason, every reason, to believe that the intelligence that we were operating off was correct and that we will, in fact, find weapons or evidence of weapons, programmes, that are conclusive. But that’s just a matter of time,” he told a Pentagon media briefing. On a recent airstrike, he said he had no reason to believe senior Iraqis were killed in a US raid on a convoy near the Syrian border last week in which US forces ended up fighting Syrian border guards.
More than five days after the raid in western Iraq, Rumsfeld and General Richard Myers were unable to say how many people were killed, who they were or whether US forces crossed into Syria. —Agencies
