Soomro calls on senator

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Muhammad Mian Soomro visited independent Senator Waqar Ahmad Khan here on Tuesday and discussed with him the prevailing political situation, particularly the confrontation between the opposition and the treasury benches.

Sources told Daily Times that Mr Soomro was busy holding meeting with various political stakeholders in the capital for evolving national harmony.

The meeting is being viewed as very important in the context of tense center-NWFP relations as Senator Waqar Ahmad Khan is believed to have the backing of a sizeable number of provincial assembly members. “The chairman senate enjoys a majority of 57 members in the House excluding his own decisive vote, and he is not threatened by tabling a no-confidence motion against him”, sources said.

Talking about the discussion held between the two, Senator Waqar Ahmad Khan said they discussed various methods for ensuring political stability in the country. “They particularly talked of maintaining harmony in the Upper House session between the treasury and the opposition benches,” he added. Mr Khan maintained there was no danger to the parliamentary system or to the provincial assemblies in the country, and he requested such perceptions, harmful to national interests, were not created.
