Caretakers can’t replace nazims: CEC

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: There is no legal provision in the Local Government Ordinance 2001 for the appointment of interim administrators or caretakers in place of district nazims, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, chief election commissioner (CEC), said on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters after activating the process of printing 350 million ballot papers at the Printing Corporation of Pakistan for the local elections, he said, “The ordinance requires an amendment if the government wants to install caretakers in place of district nazims for the interim period before the elections.”

He said the local councils issue was included in the sixth schedule of the constitution and any amendment in the law required prior permission of the president. Administrators or caretakers could not replace nazims unless the provincial governments amended their local government ordinances accordingly, he added.
