Two arrested for blasphemy

LAHORE: Police arrested two on Monday for allegedly trying to burn copies of the Quran.

Neighbours reported seeing the men watching two copies of the holy book burning on the stove, said SP Gujranwala, Zaeem Iqbal.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the home of one suspect where the incident allegedly happened, demanding that the men be publicly hanged, said the police official. The two were identified as Mohammed Yousaf and Mohammed Shahzad. They were charged under the blasphemy laws, which carry a maximum penalty of death. Police seized two partially burned copies of the Holy Quran. —AP
