‘Government to help women and juvenile inmates’
ISLAMABAD: The government is trying to arrange the release of woman and juvenile prisoners languishing in jails due to non-payment of fines imposed on them, said Zobaida Jalal, the social welfare and special education minister.
“We have allocated Rs 6 million to pay the fines of women and juvenile inmates who have completed their jail terms and have sent a summary to the prime minister in this regard,” Ms Jalal told APP on Sunday. The minister said that following her visit to the Quetta Central Jail, she would also visit Mutch Attock and Multan jails to know about the grievances of women inmates. “The Punjab inspector general of police has been asked to provide the list of those prisoners who couldn’t get out of jails after completing their sentences for non-payment of fines,” she said.
She said the largest number of woman prisoners was in Punjab jails as compared to the other provinces. She said that a summary had been sent to the prime minister to change the name of the ministry from social welfare to social development and protection. “As per our new name, we will ensure the financial protection and economic stability to beneficiaries,” she said. She said her ministry was focussing on inclusive education so that children with minor disabilities could go to normal schools. The ministry would provide equipments like glasses and wheelchairs to those children who could get education with normal children, she said. app
