Brief panic as quake jolts Madras
MADRAS: Panic briefly spread through the streets of this Indian coastal city after residents felt the shocks of an earthquake off the coast of the remote Andaman Islands.
Police said no damage or injuries were reported, but residents could be seen running in the city after it was jolted.
The east coast of India, where Madras is located, was badly hit by the Dec 26 tsunami, which was caused by a stronger earthquake off the coast of Indonesia.
A strong earthquake struck Monday near the remote Andaman Islands off southern India, which have recently been jolted by aftershocks from the giant quake that ravaged vast areas of South Asia, Hong Kong seismologists said Monday. The 6.3-magnitude quake hit near the islands in the Bay of Bengal at 12:22 pm, the Hong Kong Observatory said.
The tremor’s epicentre was about 1,740 kilometres southeast of Calcutta, the observatory said. ap
