National Women’s Football Championship: Punjab, Islamabad and AJK score wins on opening day

ISLAMABAD: Punjab, Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) registered victories while Pakistan WAPDA and Sindh played a drawn game on the opening day of the first National Women’s Football Championship at the Jinnah Stadium here on Friday.
Punjab edged out Sindh Football School of Excellence (SFSE) 4-3. Punjab led the first half 1-0. Both teams scored three goals each in the second half.
AJK defeated NWFP 2-0 with the goals scored by Ishrat and Hina. WAPDA and Sindh played a 1-1 draw with both the goals netted in the second half. Khadija and Erum were the scorers. Islamabad defeated Balochistan 1-0 under lights in the last match of the day with Niral scoring the goal in the first half. The second half remained goalless.
Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) president Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat formally declared the tournament open at 7:00 pm. He said the PFF would also organise provincial championships to promote the game at grassroots level. “The girls participating in the championship have shown keen commitment and I believe they would raise their game to a level where they can compete in international matches,” he added. The winners of the event will receive cash award of Rs 50,000, runners-up Rs 30,000 and third position holders Rs 20,000.
