National Women’s Hockey Championship: Railways give Karachi Whites an unforgettable lesson

KARACHI: Riffat Mehdi scored a volley of goals to help defending champions Pakistan Railways crush Karachi Whites 22-0 on the opening day of the 21st National Women’s Hockey Championship at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium here on Friday. In other matches, Lahore Colours defeated Quetta 3-1 and Karachi Colours scored an easy 10-0 victory over Hyderabad.

Riffat opened the account for Railways in the first minute and continued her goal spree till the end of the first half. At break, Railways were leading 12-0. The second half also proved to be a disastrous for the losers as Railways added another 10 goals. Riffat was the star of the show who scored 11 goals out of 22 including four consecutive goals. Sanam Yousuf was the second top scorer with four goals. Salma and Ishrat netted twice while Erum Bukhari, Shahida Perveen and Sabiha Mehmood scored one goal each.

The match between Lahore and Quetta was very interesting as both sides played an entertaining hockey. Lahore took the lead through Amina Khan but Quetta equalised on a penalty corner after just three minutes. In the 21st minute, Amina Mir put Lahore ahead through second penalty corner. Lahore were leading 2-1 at lemon break. In the second half, Amina Khan scored her second and Lahore’s third goal to seal the fate of the match.

Karachi were leading 3-0 at break. In the second half, they tore apart Hyderabad’s defence to score another seven goals. Sehrish played a brilliant game and slammed three goals. She was well supported by Asiya, Seema and Ghazala who dodged the Hyderabad’s goalkeeper twice each. Ambreen also scored a goal.
