PAC meeting in Washington
WASHINGTON: The Pakistani-American Congress (PAC), an umbrella group of various Pakistani organisations, began its two-day annual meeting on Capitol Hill Wednesday.
Pakistan Senate chairman Mohammadmian Soomro has been invited to be chief guest and keynote speaker. According the organisers, the meeting will also be addressed by US assistant secretary of state for South Asia, Christina Rocca, Torkel L. Patterson, deputy assistant secretary in the same division, former congressman and Pakistan lobbyist Charlie Wilson, former US ambassador to Pakistan William Milam, Stephen P. Cohen of the Brookings Institution, Ms Paul R. Newburg, author and area expert, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, Pakistan ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Mir Shakilur Rehamn of the News-Jang-Geo group, among others.
The two-day session is holding special panel discussions on Pakistan-India relations and Kashmir, the role of the Pakistani-American media, democracy and the rule of law and justice in Pakistan and the role of Pakistani-Americans in mainstream America. Special achievement awards are to be given to Prof Akbar S. Ahmed, Pakistan Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, Hashmat Effendi, journalist Khalil R. Bughio and Deomcratic party activist Shahid A. Khan.
The panel on media will consist of Syed Adeeb, Imran Anwar, Anwar Iqbal, Azim M. Mian, Enver Masud and this correspondent. staff report
