MMA proposes life term for army officials violating Constitution
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) on Monday submitted a bill to the National Assembly seeking amendments to the Army Act 1952, which suggested life imprisonment for army officers who take part in politics by violating the Constitution.
The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal proposal says that if an army officer violates Clause 2 of the Article 15 of the Army Act dealing with the oath of army officers should be imprisoned for life.
The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal said that if army officers were involved in politics and acted against sovereignty of the Constitution, violating their oath, should be given life terms. The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal said the Constitution was the supreme law of the country, adding that it was the responsibility of every official to obey his oath of office.
The religious alliance said the armed forces were the defenders of Pakistan’s borders and stopping army officials from violating the Constitution was necessary through the proposed amendment.
