Pagaro wants Shujaat replaced with Jamali or Naeem Chattha

ISLAMABAD: Pir Pagaro, the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) president, requested President General Pervez Musharraf to replace Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the PML president, either with Zafarullah Jamali or Naeem Hussain Chattha.

Sources close to Pagaro told Daily Times on Monday that the proposals were conveyed to President Musharraf for his consideration. Some PML leaders believed that Pagaro’s latest move could be a political gimmick to press Chaudhry Shujaat into loosening his grip on PML-Sindh. Jamali recently called on Pagaro after holding a meeting with President Musharraf. He told the president that since he enjoyed good relations with the PML-F chief, he could persuade him to reconcile with the Chaudhrys of Gujrat.

Sources said that Pagaro told Jamali that the latter could become the next PML president by gaining the support of like-minded anti-Shujaat elements in the party.

As far as Naeem Chattha was concerned, sources said he did meet Pagaro. The PML-F chief had good relations with his father, Muhammad Hussain Chattha, who was regarded as a dedicated PML leader. Sources said it was possible that Chattha’s name had been thrown around just to complicate the matter. Sources said the PML-F chief recently sent his lieutenants to Lahore and other parts of Punjab to meet important PML leaders, including Mian Azhar, Ijazul Haq, Farooq Leghari, Humayun Akhtar, Saleem Saifullah Khan and others who held grudges against the Chaudhrys. shahzad raza
