AJK Council now under AJK Accountability Bureau jurisdiction
ISLAMABAD: The jurisdiction of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Accountability Bureau was extended to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council.
“The decision to bring the AJK Council within the ambit of the AJK Accountability Bureau was taken at the 36th session of the council held on Monday. Earlier AJK Accountability Bureau was not allowed to look into the matters of the council,” sources privy to the meeting told Daily Times.
They said the issue was discussed in detail and the decision was unanimous. They added that the council also approved an increase in perks and privileges to members of the council, who would now get same facilities as the members of the National Assembly. The meeting also formed a committee to plan the bifurcation of the Audit and Accounts Department. The council also approved extension of the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to AJK. The council approved amendments in its Rules and Procedures of Conduct of the Business of the Council 1976 and formed a standing committee that would look after administrative matters related to the council. The appointment of the chief election commission of AJK was also discussed at the meeting but no decision was taken in this regard.
An increase in council seats was also discussed but the AJK prime minister opposed the proposal. However Syed Faisal Salah Hayat, Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas minister, thought that seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly had been increased therefore it was necessary to increase the seats of the AJK Council. staff report
