Senate committee wants PIA deal investigated
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence has recommended investigation into a controversial deal by the PIA management to sell a fleet of six A-300B4 planes, sources told Daily Times on Monday.
The three-member sub-committee consisting of Chairperson Rukhsana Zuberi, Asif Jatoi and Akram Wali was formed by Senator Nisar A Memon, the chairman of the committee, to investigate PIA’s decision to sell the aircraft. Sources said Mr Memon had directed PIA to cancel the earlier bids and seek fresh ones.
The Senate defence committee will discuss the issue today (Tuesday). PIA documents available with the Senate sub-committee showed that bids received by PIA were less than the cost of aviation gadgets installed in the planes, incurring a loss of millions of dollars in terms of revenue and lease of new aircraft to replace the A-300B4 fleet.
Sources said the documents included the latest bids of $10.1 million for six aircraft. “PIA will be paying a lease rental of $25 million for the new aircraft by selling six aircraft for $10.1 million,” the documents said.
