LHC allows DNA test to identify rapist

LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Abdul Rashid of the Lahore High Court has allowed the police to arrest everybody named by a child victim of alleged gang rape and give them DNA tests to identify the rapist who is the biological father of the baby born as a result. A petition moved on behalf of the child had said the 12-year-old became pregnant after four men raped her on March 27, 2003. She has since given birth to a baby. The Kasur district police officer (DPO), Khadim Hussain Bhatti, informed the court that a case had been registered against Ahmed Din and Shahid Riaz after the victim identified them as the rapists. Later, however, she changed her statement and identified Sajjad and Babu as the culprits. He said none of the men named by the girl had joined the investigation. He also said that neither the petitioner nor her parents were cooperating with the police, which was unable as a result to proceed further in the case. The judge observed that the victim and her family were apparently under pressure from the rapists and their supporters. He ordered the DPO to use all resources at his disposal and get to the bottom of the matter. The DPO then requested permission to arrest the suspects and give them DNA tests. The court granted the request, instructed the DPO to include the girl’s parents in the investigation and report his findings by June 6. staff report
