Terrorists could divide Europe, says Straw

COPENHAGEN: British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Tuesday called on Europe to pull together to fight terrorism, saying there was a risk that terrorists would “spread division” in the wake of the Madrid train blasts. “There is a real risk that we let the terrorists spread division. We must stay together in Europe, and internationally, to combat this common threat,” Straw said in a speech given at a seminar in Copenhagen entitled “Global challenges to the EU”. “We must combat division by engaging with people of different faiths and origins on the basis of the universal values for which we all stand,” he said. Straw said the risk of division was “serious, and we need to recognise and to address it.” —AFP
