Americans believe vote will not improve Iraq
WASHINGTON: Americans said that January 30 elections will not help calm violence in Iraq, with only one-third saying that things will get better, according to a poll released on Friday. Thirty-four percent said things will get better in Iraq, while another 34 percent said things will remain the same and 25 percent said things will get worse, according to the poll by Harris Interactive. The differences split along political lines, with 66 percent of Republicans, President George W. Bush’s party, saying things will get better. Just 16 percent of Democrats and 28 percent of independents agreed. Twenty-eight percent of those polled said that the elections would lead to a freer, more democratic form of government while 24 percent said Iraq would become a model for liberty and democracy for the Middle East. The poll was taken on-line January 11-16 among 2,209 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points. afp
